To understand principles of qualitative approach and related methods
To know the different methods to collect qualitative data, the principles of analysis and their use in public health.
Main themes
1. Introduction : the qualitative methods in public health, constructivist versus positivist approach, the relationship between qualitative and quantitative approaches ; key concepts in qualitative approach (the importance of the theory and /or conceptual model, reflexivity and position of the researcher in relation to the subject of the research, sampling )
2. General methodological design using qualitative approach :
a. Cases studies
b. Action research
3. Critical reading of an article using qualitative methods : quality criteria for qualtitative approach
4. Interviews
5. Consensus methods : Delphi method and nominal group
6. Focus groupes
7. Observation
8. Introduction to the analysis of qualitative data
Content and teaching methods
The course is mainly organized through theoretical lectures illustrated by examples. It is completed by practical exercises solved in class, a syllabus with references for complementary bibliography.
Student is invited to discover basic notions and use it to solve concrete problems.
