By the end of the course the student should:
- be familiar with the explanations given to the selected phenomena from different theories and models of language and with their conceptual framework.
- have developed a descriptive perspective about contents previously introduced in his/her curriculum from a normative point of view
- be able to apply the research method of corpus linguistics to Spanish texts
- be able to read specialized articles in linguistics in Spanish and articles contained in Gramática descriptiva de la lengua española
Main themes
This course aims to approach from a descriptive point of view and with a linguistic conceptual framework some morphosyntactic and lexical aspects in Spanish. The topics have been chosen because of their complexity for a student of Spanish as second language.
Content and teaching methods
Content :
In order to arouse the descriptive perspective on the language in the students, this course will deal with different aspects of the phonetics, morphology, syntax and lexicology subject to variation in the Spanish speaking world. The topics are:
1. The concept of variation. The dialectology, the sociolinguistics and their methods.
2. Theories about the origin of the Spanish varieties in America.
3. Dialectal areas of the Spanish in America ?
4. The phonological and phonetical system of Modern Spanish.
5. Phonetic variation in the Spanish speaking world.
6. Morpho syntactic variation in the Spanish speaking world.
7. Lexical variation in the Spanish speaking world.
Methods
Theoretical courses alternated with exercises of phonetic transcription, analysis of (oral and written) texts, recognition of different variants of Spanish and oral presentation by students.
