Workflow Information Systems (WISs) are considered fundamental systems in the information society as they integrate aspects relevant to three dimensions: organizational (what is the appropriate organizational structure which would support the management of a workflow), functional (what are the appropriate functions to be executed in the workflow), and operational (what are the different tasks to be carried out by the various end users of the workflow).
This course studies aspects relevant to the three aforementioned dimensions by modeling a workflow thanks to three levels of details: workflow, process, and task. The dynamics of functions executed in the workflow is modeled in terms of state-transition diagrams, state charts, and Petri nets.
The course is relying on the Workflow Management Coalition terminology.
