Aims

By the end of this course, students will have acquired the following:
1) active mastery of the fundamentals of classical Latin syntax;
2) an ability to translate and analyse intermediate level literary texts (taken from classical prose-writers).

Main themes

A systematic approach to the fundamentals of classical Latin syntax : acquisition of key syntactic structures (use of tenses and moods); personal reading and linguistic analysis of classical prose texts.

Content and teaching methods

Study of the fundamental rules of Latin syntax, especially the syntax of subordinate clauses (use of tenses and moods). The theoretical approach is completed by the linguistic analysis of classical texts. The course includes the personal translation of a Classical prose text (cursory reading at home).

Prerequisite: One of these courses given during the first term: FLTR 1780/1781 (Latin language and texts I) or FLTR 1760 (Beginning Latin).
Evaluation: continuous assessment throughout the year through oral testing and personal work (exercises on syntax). The end-of-year examination includes a written and an oral part.
Requirements: This course should be followed together with FLTR 1142 (Basics of Latin Grammar).
