The aim of this course is to introduce the student to a socio-anthropological approach to the integration of Europe, to discover its principles, and to become familiar with some of its main conceptual tools.
Main themes
The course analyses the main socio-anthropological topics involved in the construction of the European Community in the broad sense, e.g., interdependence, identity, and collective mobilisation. It makes use of both micro- and macro-sociological analysis.
Content and teaching methods
- Introduction: Principles of a socio-anthropological approach to the construction of Europe.
- Micro-socioanthropological analysis of a European institution. Application: actual practices and relations of the institution of "commissioner".
- Europe as a system of interdependence. The notion of configuration (Elias) applied to Europe. Europe and the States.
- The issue of European identity.
- Power relationships in Europe. Theories about power and analysis of social networks applied to Europe.
- Collective action and mobilisation in Europe: transnational social networks, international non-governmental organisations, and transnational networks of activists. Specificity of collective action in Europe.
- Macro-sociological approach to Europe. Europe as a modern, reflexive society. Applications to the problem of environmental risk.
