The students will acquire a basic knowledge in the field of the painting of the 16th and the 17th centuries in the Southern Low Countries. The focus will be on Pieter Bruegel the Elder for the 16th century, Pieter-Paul Rubens, Anton Van Dijck, Jacob Jordaens for the 17th century.
Main themes
Pieter Bruegel the Elder will be discussed at length. After a general overview of his work, one of his masterpieces The Triumph of Death (Madrid, Prado) will be examined in detail. Attention will also be paid to the production of his sons, Pieter the Jounger and Jan the Velvet, and mainly their copies after their father: what were their models and how did they achieve their huge production? For the 17th century, the most famous masters, Rubens, Van Duhck and Jordaens, will be considered and compared.

Teaching methods: theoretical. The students have to write a short paper. If the circumstances (time, number of students..) allow it, the students will present the results of their investigations.
