To be able to interpret a theatrical play ; replace it in its cultural context ; analyse it in a critical way with as learned in class ; identify the different textual levels and their interactions.
Main themes
In this course, we will study different aspects of italian theatre. Through the analysis of Ariosto's comedies and other works (such as the Orlando Furioso), as well as other theatrical works of the period, the student will be brought to reflect on the function and the representation of communication, on the idea that theatre and its poetic and esthetic functions assume functions that transpire from the dramatic text itself. Approaches : semiotic, post-semiotic approaches, cultural analysis, historical.
Content and teaching methods
Through the in-depth analysis of cultural context and the comedies of the Ariosto, we will explain its functioning, its interaction (controversial or not) of different codes and plans. We will then move on to analysing the acts of communication and the consequences that stem out of them for the interpretation of Ariosto's comedies and of his poetics.
