To achieve the in-depth study of a work or of several works related to ancient and/or middle french, in order to refine the students' analysis skills and to introduce them to different critical approaches.
Main themes
As an echo to the thematic approach of the ROM 2221 course, an in-depth analysis of one or several works on a given theme is here tackled.
Content and teaching methods
Lecture. As with the courses ROM2221 and 2222, this course aims at completing the background training on french medieval literature through the in-depth study of a work or of an author or of several related works. The texts surveyed will correspond to the diachronic and thematic approach of the ROM 2221 course. For instance : literature and politics ; Christine de Pizan's L'advision Cristine ; Alain Chartier's works ; Georges Chastelain's Livre de paix, etc. ; Functions and figures of authors ; Guillaume de Machaut, Eustache Deschamps, etc. As opposed to the course ROM 2222, the focus here is set on a type of philological explanation which is thereafter transferred to the progressive observation from the texts and critical approaches studied and analysed (precedently brought up in the course ROM2221).
