By the end of the course the student should:
-have developed a descriptive perspective about contents previously introduced in his/her curriculum from a normative point of view;
-be familiarized with the methods used in sociolinguistics and synchronic dialectology;
-be able to make a phonetic transcription out of an audio or video recording in modern Spanish;
-be able to recognize in an oral/written text the (phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical) features of the dialect areas in modern Spanish;
-be provided with the basic linguistic tools in order to read literary texts coming from the different dialect areas of the Spanish speaking world.
Main themes
This course aims to tackle from a descriptive and synchronic point of view a set of phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical aspects of modern Spanish, which is subject to variation in the Spanish speaking world.
Content and teaching methods
Content :
1. The concept of variation. Dialectology, sociolinguistics and their methods.
2. The phonological and phonetic system of Modern Spanish.
3. Theories about the origin of the Spanish varieties in America.
4. Dialectal areas of the Spanish in America.
5. Phonetic variation in the Spanish speaking world.
6. Morphosyntactic variation in the Spanish speaking world.
7. Lexical variation in the Spanish speaking world.
Method :
Theoretical courses will alternate with phonetic transcription, analysis of (oral and written) texts, recognition of different variants of Spanish and oral presentation by students.
