Aims

Knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the organs of phonation. Understanding of the vibration mechanisms of the vocal chords and resonance phenomena.

Main themes

Anatomy of the larynx. Anatomy of the resonators. Nerve paths for phonation : motor and sensory circuits. Laryngeal physiology of phonation and deglutition. Theories of vibration. Role of resonators. Finck's theories. Factors influencing phonation. Substitution voices.

Content and teaching methods

The course deals with the anatomy and physiology of peripheral and central systems of phonation and articulation. In addition, the course will provide understanding of the pathology of the voice and oral language. The following topics are also covered: the theory of vocal chord vibration; the physiology of resonators; the factors influencing vocal production; the classification of voices; the formation and combination of vowels and consonants; the regulation of phonation and substitution voices.
Methods
Teaching methods are geared to student participation and encourage them to take responsibility for their own learning using notes, computer presentations, CD-ROMs and the internet.
