To gain an overview of the cognitive processes involved in the production and comprehension of language in normal adults.
Main themes
Main issues in the psychology of language, historical background, mechanisms for the perception and production of speech, structure and working of mental lexis, syntactic processes, discursive mechanisms and pragmatic skills.
Content and teaching methods
The course is organized around four main 4 axes :
1) organization of mental lexis and processes for accessing lexical items, in production and comprehension, both orally and in writing
2) syntactic processes, in the light of recent linguistic models (briefly introduced) and empirical work on the production and comprehension of phrases
3) macro-organization of speech or texts : impact on inferences on semantic integration, segmentation and planning of speech, regulation of conversational exchanges
4) contextual variables (pragmatic) as they affect production and comprehension of wording : acts of speaking, presuppositions, cooperation between people
