The course aims at developing the communication skills (mainly reading comprehension, listening comprehension and speaking)
Reading Comprehension :
- The student should be able to understand a wide range of texts concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints
- The student should be able to understand the essential meaning of standard texts related to his/her particular field of specialization.
B2 Level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Listening Comprehension :
- The student should be able to understand an informal conversation in standard Dutch on everyday subjects or topics of personal or professional interest.
- The student should be able to understand the main points of a radio or television programme in standard language about current events.
- The student should be able to understand a radio or television programme related to his/her particular field of specialization.
B2 level of the "Common European Framework for Languages"
Speaking Skills :
- The student should be able to express himself fluently and with precision on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life.
- The student should be able to present clear descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to the history of Flanders and Flemish art.
B1+ Level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for languages"
Writing Skills :
- The student should be able to write personal letters describing experiences and
impressions.
- The student should be able to write short reports, passing on information and giving
reasons in support of or against a particular point of view.
B1- Level of the "Common European Framework of Reference for languages"
Code :
- Vocabulary : - consolidation and review of the basic vocabulary
- increase of the standard vocabulary
- broadening of the student's range of specialized vocabulary
- Grammar : consolidation of the command of the basic structures as well as the more
complex structures of the Dutch language
The use of vocabulary and grammar is seen from a communicative viewpoint.
Nevertheless, accuracy is not neglected.
Culture :
In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the student aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects. Emphasis will be laid on his/her particular field of specialization.
Main themes
The field-related and the socio-professional vocabulary is presented in written or spoken
texts linked to the student's domain. They are also used to exercise and develop reading and
listening strategies and to introduce oral communication skills.
The vocabulary, the structures and the oral communication skills are exercised by means of
written and oral production (role-plays, debates, presentations, meetings, guided excursions
to Flanders).
Content and teaching methods
NEER 1810 - intermediate level
- 60-hours course taught 2 hours a week throughout the academic year
- Intended for the students FLTR 12 BA, the students of FILO 11 BA or 12 BA and the students of THEO (THEO 11 BA in the first term; 30 hours and THEO 12 BA in the second term; 30 hours)
Pre-requisites : level B1 - of the CEF for the receptive skills (reading and listening)
level A2+ for the speaking skills (main objectives) and A2- for the writing skills
Aims :
B2 level of the CEF for the receptive skills, level B1+ of the CEF for the speaking skills (main objectives), level B1- of the CEF for the writing skills.
Content and pedagogical approach :
- self-study : increase of the standard vocabulary (Woorden in Context deel II, Editions De Boeck
- broadening of the student's field-related vocabulary (self-study of the vocabulary of the oral and written texts in the syllabus)
- the specific Dutch structures are presented in oral and written exercises. They are consolidated by means of individual exercises, cf. CD-Rom ILV
- the receptive skills are exercised and developed by means of reading/ listening techniques and strategies applied to authentic written or spoken texts bearing on general as well as field-related subjects, supplied with comprehension and vocabulary exercises.
- The oral skills (free and conducted) will be exercised through both individual and interactive production.
- The written skills (conducted) will be exercised through individual production.
Evaluation :
continuous assessment, written and oral exam.

This course is of an upper intermediate level. The student should have followed the first year course of a

corresponding to the B1- level of the "Common European Framework for Languages" for the receptive skills and show a relative communicative ability in that mastery (A2+ level of the CEFL).
