The main objective is to develop the necessary skills (speaking and listening) for the students to express
themselves in communicative, interactive situations, on the topics dealt with in the lectures of FLTR1250.
Listening Comprehension :
Individual :
- Can understand straightforward factual information about common everyday or study related topics, identifying
both general messages and specific details, provided speech is clearly articulated in a generally familiar accent
- Can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work,
school, leisure etc. including short narratives.
Interactive :
- Can generally follow the main points of extended discussion around him/her, provided speech is articulated in
standard dialect
- Can understand the information content of the majority of recorded or broadcast audio material on topics of
personal interest delivered in clear standard speech

Speaking (main objective) :
Individual :
- Can give a simple description or presentation of people, living or working conditions, daily routines, likes/dislikes,
etc. as a short series of simple phrases and sentences linked into a list
Interactive :
- Can interact with reasonable ease in structured situations and short conversations, provided the other person
helps if necessary. Can manage simple, routine exchanges without undue effort, can ask and answer questions
and exchange ideas and information on familiar topics in predictable everyday situations
- Can give a short, rehearsed presentation on a topic pertinent to his/her everyday life, briefly given reasons and
explanations for opinions, plans and actions. Can cope with a limited number of straightforward follow up

Main themes :
Thematic contents of FLTR1250: themes that may interest young adults wanting to explore the culture of the Netherlands and Flanders in the largest sense. The acquisition of a basic communicative vocabulary will be the primary goal of this course. Much attention will be paid to the comprehension of texts dealing with subjects of general and cultural interest.- 30 hours of lecturing during which (1) basic articles and (2) audio-visual materials will be presented and analysed- 30 hours of accompanying exercises (NEER1250) in small groups (listening comprehension, accompanying texts) on the topics dealt with in the lectures.
Culture:
In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.

Feedback will be given and remedial exercises may be suggested. Clear, detailed instructions will be given to the students before each activity.
