This course is intended to teach students theoretical and practical aspects of musical theory and harmony, critically reinterpreted within a musicological perspective. The principal musical forms are introduced.
Main themes
The course revises aspects of the theory of music, elements of harmony and counterpoint, harmonic figuring, basso continuo arrangements and teaches the most important musical forms and genres.
Content and teaching methods
The course revises key notions of musical theory. Techniques of harmonic figuring: figuring basso continuo, the root relationship (basse fondamentale) and elements of harmony and counterpoint. A number of basic musical forms are also analysed (the sonata, fugue, rondo etc.). Students are expected to carry out a large amount of practical work.
