Aims

By the end of the course the students will be able to translate by themselves Byzantine texts in the classical or colloquial language ; and they will have mastered the principal working tools : specialized dictionaries, grammars, etc. This course is given alternately with the course GLOR 2792. The choice of the author to be studied is fixed in relation to the level and interests of the students.

Main themes

Translation and analysis of Byzantine texts chosen for their historic, linguistic or literary value. Studied in past sessions : Digenis Acritas, Psellos, Chronogaphy, Anna Comnena, Alexiade, Procopius, Secret History, Stephanites and Ichnelates, Katomyomachia, etc.

A deep reading of Byzantine texts chosen for their historic or literary value.
Studied in past sessions : Digenis Acritas, Psellos, Chronogaphy, Anna Comnena, Alexiade, Procopius, Secret History, Stephanites and Ichnelates, Katomyomachia, etc. a good knowledge of ancient Greek is indispensable.
