Aims

The course, alternating with the course GLOR 2671, aims at improving the student's proficiency in Sanskrit language and philology, as well as an introduction to one or another literary Prakrit.

Main themes

The lectures in Sanskrit are devoted to the commented reading of narrative, poetical and/or technical texts in Classical or epic language. To the commentaries on the language, the literary expressing and the cultural context, is added a philological training dealing with the editorial problems, including the reading of manuscripts and early commentaries. The weekly work of the student is to prepare the grammar and the vocabulary of the texts concerned. The course also gives an initiation into one or another literary Prakrit, i.e. either, stricto sensu, in Middle Indo-Aryan (dialects of the inscriptions or the dramas), or, lato sensu, in Ancient Dravidian (Classical Tamil or manipravalam). Besides the lectures, each student prepares by himself a peculiar text, chosen according to his interest and his level of learning.

Prerequisites : A basic knowledge of the Sanskrit language is presupposed for attending the class.
