Application of analytical methods concerning pictures produced by new media like photography, film, video and digital images.

The course discusses specific interpretation problems concerning the impact of new media in art related to aspects of creation, distribution, documentation and perception of art.
Content and teaching methods
Contents: The main topic to be treated during the year 2007/2008 is the impact of photography in the avant-gardes of the 1920ties and 1930ties (Russian constructivism, Dadaism and Surrealism). The analysis of the photographical work is completed by the discussion of the main theories of avant-garde photography (Moholy-Nagy, Rodchenko, Hausmann, Kracauer, Benjamin) to clarify the interaction of aesthetical, ideological and social issues (transgression of artistic tradition, claim of a new pictorial language for a new society etc.).
The content and the structure of the course will be related to the courses Special problems of modern art and Special problems of contemporary art.
Teaching methods: Talks will be given by the teacher, invited speakers and students. It is expected that the students familiarize themselves with the topics by reading one or more related articles before each session. A list of articles will be provided at the beginning of the course.

Prerequisites: A course of art of the 20th century
Evaluation: The students are evaluated on the basis of their active participation, one presentation and one thesis about a specific subject.
