Dans cet article, je discute de l’utilisation et de l’absence de la particule modale ἄν et κεν chez Homère. Je donne d’abord un aperçu des explications précédentes et les discute de manière critique, puis j’applique les résultats aux formes du subjonctif et de l’optatif de la racine *wekw « parler ». J’ai choisi ce corpus parce que c’est un verbe courant et qu’il propose environ 120 occurrences à discuter. L’enquête est fondée sur deux théories antérieures, à savoir celle de Hartung et von Bäumlein, selon laquelle la particule modale était préférée dans les cas concrets et absente dans les énoncés génériques (une théorie suivie par Delbrück, Monro, Chantraine et Ruijgh), et celle de Basset, qui soutenait que la particule modale n’était utilisée que dans des cas étroitement liés au contexte du locuteur. Mon analyse vérifiera si ces théories peuvent être appliquées ou non.

Abstract:
In this article, I discuss the use and absence of the modal particle (MP) ἄν and κεν in Homer. I first give an overview of the previous explanations and discuss them critically, then I apply the findings to the subjunctive and optative forms of the root *wekw “speak”. I chose this corpus because it is a common verb and offers about 120 instances to discuss. The investigation is based on two previous theories: one by Hartung and von Bäumlein according to which the MP was preferred in concrete instances and absent in generic statements (a theory followed by Delbrück, Monro, Chantraine and Ruijgh) and the other by Basset, who argued that the MP was only used in instances closely related to the realm of the speaker. My analysis will check whether these theories can be applied or not.
