L’interesse degli studiosi moderni per il poeta di corte costantiniano Optaziano Porfirio si è focalizzato sulle sue ineguagliabili creazioni artistiche e letterarie: a margine del contenuto delle sue poesie, possiamo rintracciarvi riferimenti alle circostanze e agli eventi del tempo. Le poesie di Optaziano costituiscono una fonte importante per coloro che intendono ricostruire le vicende legate ai vari personaggi della corte imperiale: sebbene non siano un documento di prim’ordine, le poesie di Optaziano possono, almeno in parte, contribuire a delineare un quadro più completo del periodo attraverso l’integrazione e il confronto con altri storici “di pro­fessione”. L’articolo si propone di valutare l’attendibilità di Optaziano come fonte storica, le cui informazioni potrebbero costituire un documento di fondamentale importanza, data la “prossimità” del poeta alla corte di Costantino, in relazione soprattutto al resoconto autoptico di fatti a cui l’autore probabilmente partecipò in prima persona.

Abstract:
The interest of modern scholars in the court Constantine poet Optatian Porphyrius has focused on his matchless artistic and literary creations: within the content of his poems, we can see references to the circumstances and the events of the time. The poems of Optatian are an important source for those wishing to reconstruct the events related to the various characters of the imperial court: although not documents of the first order, the poems of Optatian can, at least partly, help to shape a more complete picture of the period through integration and comparison with the work of other historians. The article aims to assess the reliability of Optatian as a historical source, whose information could constitute a document of paramount importance, given the “proximity” of the poet to the court of Constantine, and the autopsy evidence of any aspects in which the author is likely to have been involved.
