Résumé :
Le but de cette étude est de montrer comment le témoignage de Diogène Laërce (IX, 54) concernant les quatre fonctions du λόγος d’Alcidamas (φάσις – ἀπόφασις – ἐρώτησις – προσαγόρευσις : affirmation – négation – demande – réponse) peut être considéré comme fondé tant du point de vue rhétorique que philosophique. On peut tirer deux ordres de considérations : le premier couple (φάσις – ἀπόφασις) pourrait être rapporté à la fonction anti-prédicative du λόγος, mais aussi à la fonction prédicative impliquée dans la dialectique de l’ἀντίθεσις qui était propre à Gorgias ; le deuxième (ἐρώτησις – προσαγόρευσις) serait à rapporter à la rhétorique de l’improvisation et de la πολυτροπία, elles aussi gorgiennes. Deux points sont développés : 1) l’éléatisme dialectique gorgien d’Alcidamas, où sont soulignés les concepts de vérité et de vraisemblance et de philosophie et du sophiste philosophe ; 2) l’herméneutique d’Alcidamas comme μίμησις τῶν πραγμάτων du point de vue expositif et stylistique.

Abstract:
Alcidamas’ eleatic-gorgian Rhetoric in Diogenes Laertius (IX, 54) and the Four Fundamental Functions of the λόγος.

This study aims to show that the testimony of Diogenes Laertius (IX, 54) regarding the four functions of the λόγος by Alcidamas (φάσις – ἀπόφασις – ἐρώτησις – προσαγόρευσις) negation question answer) could be considered as justified from both rhetorical and philosophical points of view. It offers the opportunity for two trains of thought: the first pair (φάσις – ἀπόφασις) could be related to the anti-predicative function of λόγος, but also to the predicative function implied in Gorgias’ own dialectics of ἀντίθεσις. The second pair (ἐρώτησις – προσαγόρευσις) would be related to the rhetoric of improvisation and of πολυτροπία, also characteristic of Gorgias’ rhetoric. Two points are developed: 1) The gorgian dialectic eleatism of Alcidamas, in which are emphasised the concepts of truth and likelihood and of philosophy and the philosophic sophist; 2) Alcidamas’ hermeneutics, such as from the explanatory and stylistic point of view.
