Abstract :
This article describes the various ways
in which disturbed conditions of mind and heart are spoken of in poetry of the
Archaic Age (750-440 B.C.). It shows how phrenes, noos, thumos and
also ētor, kēr, and kradiē
were negatively affected. It discusses the evidence for various disturbed states,
illustrating their nature and causes. It thus sheds light on how early Greek
poets viewed one type of psychological activity in human beings.
