Abstract :
The enigma of L. Licinius Lucullus’ life puzzled even his
biographer Plutarch. His early career as Sulla’s trusted associate was
distinguished both for military and naval successes and for wise and humane
administration of the war-ravaged Greek states in Asia. Yet his Eastern command
showed thirst for military glory and adulation, and personal greed, leading
him to prolong the war against Mithridates and Tigranes. Arrogance and contempt
for his troops led to mutiny, negating past victories, and to his recall. The
luxury of his retired life disgusted even his friends.
