Abstract :
The battle of Cunaxa (401 B.C.), described
by Xenophon in the Anabasis, is the only one described by him of which
he is known to have been an eyewitness. It is of interest also as an encounter
between armies relying on totally different tactics – the Medes and Persians
on cavalry attack and the Greeks on close combat of heavy infantry. A reconstruction
of the battle is presented, based on critical examination of the accounts of
Xenophon and others.
