Abstract :
Until recently military historians have concentrated on tactics and personalities when examining both ancient and modern militaries. Even with the great strides made by recent generations of historians in concentrating on the organization and nature of the military, certain historical methods have to prove that the military, and particularly the military unit, represents a structure in the sense that Braudel used the term. The importance of this military structure is most clearly evidenced by its persistence in Greek and Roman society.
