Abstract:
In Poem 10 the traditionally abrasive humor of sal becomes the sign
of a dramatic tension between the historical poet and his persona.
Through the device of reminiscence and the persona’s failure
to show a concern for his own and others’ self-image, Catullus brings
sal under the guidance of ratio. The linkage of the two reveals
the importance to the poet of friendship and becomes the basis of self-scrutiny.
