Abstract:
There appears to have been a movement towards paratactic modes of expression in late antiquity, and an increased sensitivity to nonverbal communication. This was partly a reaction to the verbal, logical bias of the hierarchical structures and thought-modes of the early empire. Art, architecture, metrical and linguistic change, ceremonial, coins, religious controversies and literary expression all provide evidence for a shift in cognitive style.
