Abstract:
In the first part of the article, the author argues that from the time of Kleisthenes’
reforms at Athens onward each of the archonships was rotated through the phylai
in a ten year cycle. Within each cycle the tribal order was determined by the
lot. This circumstances permits the generation of a new argument for 507/6 as
the archon year of Alkmeon which Pollux associates with the inception of the
Kleisthenic constitution. In the second part, the author suggests that the “reactionary”
Isagorean council of 300 was based on Kleisthenes’ phylai and
trittyes and is therefore critically evidential for the relative order
of political events of Athens in the wake of the tyranny’s fall.
