Abstract:
Unlike several previous examination of Seneca’s De Providentia
which are concerned with this work’s rhetorical organization, the present
study focuses upon literary structure and artistic form. Seneca’s use
of irony, of paradox, of personal reference, of a hardheaded adversarius,
and a Euripidean deus ex machina – all serve to complicate and
to enrich what might have been merely formal argument or facile debate.
