The Electromagnetic Wave

This program shows an electromagnetic wave with linear or circular polarization and the effect of an analyzer (Polaroid film).

In the coming upgrade, version 1.1 submitted to Apple Store , a “help button” will be included giving the meaning of each button + a few pages of explanations (screens below).

Study:

An electromagnetic wave has its E field always perpendicular to the B field and the propagation of the wave is in the direction of the vector product E x B. Check those properties on the animation.

Because the analyzer transmits the component of the incident E field parallel to its axis, check that it will transmit 100 % of the wave in the case of a linearly polarized incident wave if E is parallel to the polarizer axis but will stop the wave if E is perpendicular to the polarizer axis.

Hence, a circularly incident wave can never be stopped by the polarizer.
