Transient synovitis of the hip

First cause of claudication in children less than 10 years old. The cause of this sterile synovitis of the hip is unknown but it is often preceded by an infectious episode. Claudication is accompanied by moderate to severe pain located to hip, thigh or groin.

Spontaneous resolution usually in a few days: NSAIDs and rest. In case of significant pain or uncertain diagnosis: hospitalization for traction of the limb.

Differential diagnosis: septic arthritis.


Anesthetic implications: 

possible indication for puncture under sedation
