Menetrier disease

(giant hypertrophic gastropathy)
Rare. Acquired pathology of the gastric mucosa the folds of which get hypertrophic (especially at the level of the fundus) resulting in a massive loss of protein secondary to hypersecretion of gastric mucus. At histologyicalexamination: thickening of the mucosa, foveolar hyperplasia and glandular atrophy .
Signs: epigastric pain, vomiting, hypoalbuminemia, weight loss.
Sometimes associated with Helicobacter pilori or CMV infection.
In adults, associated with lymphocytic gastritis or gastric carcinoma (10-15%).
Anesthetic implications:
check plasmatic protein level; important gastric volume of fluids.
