Meige's dystonia

(Meige's syndrome)

Warning: not to be confused with Meige's disease (congenital lymphedema) !

Form of focal dystonia, also known as "Brueghel syndrome" or "orofacial dystonia." It is actually an association of two distinct forms of dystonia: blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia (involuntary and repetitive contractions of the muscles of the mouth, the jaw and the tongue).

The main symptoms consist of involuntary blinking movements of the eyes with a protracted chin. Some patients may experience excessive protrusion of the tongue, wrinkling of the eyes, sensitivity to light, confused speech, uncontrollable contraction of the skin muscle of the neck or even laryngeal dystonia (laryngeal spasms). The oromandibular dystonia can affect speech.
