Mallory-Weiss, syndrome

Superficial  and longitudinal tear of the mucosa at the junction between the esophagus and the stomach, at the level of the cardia. It is caused by repeated and prolonged, vomiting resulting in a sometimes massive hmatemesis.  Pathologies responsible for repeated vomiting such as eating disorders (boulimia) or patients not complying with the mandatory diet after the installation of a gastric ring, are rare causes of it but any vomiting even in the context of infectious gastroenteritis can be complicated by this syndrome. The bleeding is not usually serious and stops spontaneously.

Anesthetic implications:

full stomach, hypovolemia, anemia
