Dyke-Davidoff-Masson, syndrome

Rare. Hemiatrophy of one cerebral hemisphere which can result in facial asymmetry, convulsions, contralateral hemiparesis, mental retardation and learning disabilities.

The causes may be

-         congenital: a perinatal vascular accident; neuroimaging then shows a shift of the heterolateral structures to the affected side.

-         acquired: due to trauma, ischemia, infection or unilateral cerebral hemorrhage.

Anesthetic implications:

epilepsy, mental retardation, verify the absence of hypertension and thrombophilia. Risk of difficult mask ventilation or intubation, specially if the right side is involved.
