(Neurolipomatosis, painful symmetrical lipomatosis)

Unknown prevalence. Mainly in postmenopausal women, between 45 and 50 years.

Lipomas may be localized or diffuse and may appear anywhere, except on the face and neck. The most frequent locations are: knees, upper part of the thighs, back, and upper arms. Lipomas near the joints cause arthralgias. Paresthesia and bruising are observed on the skin above the fat deposits.

Differential diagnosis: other lipomatoses, fibromyalgia, neurofibromatosis type I.

Treatment: excision of lipomas, liposuction.
