Cretinism

Pathology resulting from a congenital untreated deficiency of thyroid hormones (see hypothyroidism). This results in a poor
physical and mental development.
From the physical point of view, people with cretinism present with:
- soft, malformed bones
- dysharmonious dwarfism with retardation of bone age. There is a dental malocclusion, a diastema and an intermaxillary hollowness . Delayed dentition, microdontia and permanent dentin dysplasia. Generalized edema and dry skin
- a small lower jaw; macroglossia with tongue protrusion
From the psychological point of view, people suffering from cretinism have a mental disability.
Anesthetic implications:
mental retardation, short stature
