Carrington, disease

(Chronic eosinophilic pneumonia)

Very rare. Association of respiratory and general subacute or chronic symptoms caused by an alveolar and/or plasmatic eosinophilia and peripheral lung infiltrates at imagery. Blood eosinophils level is generally greater than 1,000 / mm3. The response to oral corticosteroid therapy is spectacular, and may constitute a test diagnosis for the disease. However, relapse or evolution to a severe asthma are frequent when the dose is reduced or the treatment discontinued.

In some cases, an evolution to Churg-Strauss syndrome (see this term) is observed.

Anesthetic implications:

check arterial blood gases at room air; a bronchodilator or chronic corticoids are usually taken by the patient.
