|
(Medullary sponge kidney)
The most frequent congenital malformation of the kidney. Unknown origin: there are familial cases. It consists of precaliceal ectasies of the renal tubules; it remains asymptomatic for a long time but small precalyceal lithiasis can develop and result in repeated urinary tract infections. The malformation can be bilateral (70%), unilateral or limited to a segment of a kidney.
Possibly associated problems:
- hypercalciuria
- hypocitraturia
- Caroli disease (see this term)
Anesthetic implications:
monitor the renal function, ensure optimal hydration in the perioperative period.
