The Hamburgisches WeltwirtschaftsInstitut (HWWI) is an independent economic research institute, which was founded in 2005. The Institute is a non-profit limited liability company (gemeinnützige GmbH) under German law. The joint shareholders of the Institute are the University of Hamburg and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.

The HWWI specialises in the early recognition and interdisciplinary analysis of key economic, societal and political trends. The HWWI use its fundamental and applied research expertise to develop economically relevant results for business, society and politics.

The HWWI's profile is made up of the four research programmes in which it acts in a scientific and consultancy capacity :

  • Hamburg and Regional Development
  • World Economy
  • Migration Research Group
  • The HWWI has an office in the federal state Thuringia (Erfurt) and is the sole shareholder of the HWWI Consult GmbH.
