The British International Studies Association annual conference 2026 <\/a>took place in Brighton from 3rd<\/sup> to 5th<\/sup> of June<\/strong>. On this occasion, Pr. Amandine Orsini took part in a panel on \u201cShaping the International through a lens of accountability to children and young people<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>. She presented a paper on youth and international climate litigation, questioning the extent to which it would lead to more environmental justice for young people and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, research on the role of youth in International Relations is scarce, especially when it comes to environmental politics. Initial research points to a blatant marginalisation and invisibilisation of youth in these international arenas. However, in parallel, a rise in climate litigation cases involving youth can be observed (nearly half of international climate litigation cases are initiated by youth activists according to the first CLAIM sample).\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To understand this paradox, the presented research paper dives into a comparative approach to youth narratives in global environmental politics and in international climate litigation. This approach aimed at understanding whether narratives used in those two different forums by youth activists would echo each other or be different, and the reasons for the similarities or variations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First results enabled to highlight different preliminary findings. In climate litigation, young people are increasingly viewed through the conceptual lens of intergenerational equity. As in global environmental governance forums, they face persistent adultism, which sometimes prevents them from putting their expertise forward. Consequently, it appears that they tend to emphasise their lived experiences and powerful storylines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
