Aims

Philosophy of Religion
By the end of this course, the student should be capable of expressing the relationship between philosophy and religion while respecting both religion's originality and philosophy's right to reflect on religion.

Main themes

Religion belongs to human culture and as such it is of general importance for mankind and, particularly, for mankind's reflection on his condition. Herein lies the role of the philosophy of religion. Far removed from any positivist temptation (fundamentalism, fideism), this discipline assures the believer as to the general conditions of religion with regard to thought. Furthermore, for the unbeliever, it proposes an approach to religion in his mental status, in accordance with human sciences. This philosophy of religion course takes its inspiration from the great precedents (Kant, Schelling, Hegel, etc.; and theologians when they talk like philosophers: Origen, Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, etc.). It forewarns against any confusion between theology and religious philosophy.
