Message of the Coordinator

Last month, the KULeuven and UCL teams joined forces to organize the fall study day of DYSCO : it was a meeting with all emphasis on achievements from our own network. Many thanks to both teams for the smooth organization and to all speakers and participants for making it happen.
I also want to draw your attention to our upcoming events. Next month we will have a Graduate School Course on Tensor Decompositions and Applications, delivered by Lieven De Lathauwer from KULeuven and Nikos Sidiropoulos from the University of Minnesota. Please also note the first announcement for the Benelux Meeting on Systems and Control for wich submissions are now open. You will find more information about it in this newsletter.
Meanwhile, I take this opportunity to wish you the best for 2017 as well as a Merry Christmas !

ELEC seminar (see : http://vubirelec.be/education/seminars)

'Target/Source Localization by an Imperfect Network of Binary'

Thursday November 24th - 12:00

Dept ELEC, Building K, 7th floor

Speaker : ErWei Bai, University of Iowa

Target/source localization is a part of our Cyber-Physical System that monitors hazardous material. Target/source localization is a parameter (location) estimation problem. In this talk, target/source localization and tracking by a network of imperfect and primitive binary sensors will be discussed. Binary sensors are inexpensive and can be employed in a large number. However, cheap binary sensors are imperfect and subject to various uncertainties. In this talk, detailed analysis, mathematical modeling of imperfect binary sensors and convergence results will be presented. Numerical algorithms for source localization and tracking are proposed along with convergence and asymptotic normally results. Further a distributive way to calculate the globally optimal estimate by using only local information provided by binary sensors is derived.

The VUB-ELEC department is proud to announce the 2017 edition of the

ELEC Workshop on System Identification 29 May - 23 June 2017

as a continuation of 9 successful editions of the 'ELEC Doctoral School on the Identification of Nonlinear Dynamic Systems'.

The workshop brings together researchers in System Identification and researchers/industrials who are in need of modelling tools, based on measured/simulation data. As a participant, you will have the opportunity to

• learn frequency domain system identification tools from experts in the field, • have hands-on experience with system identification tools on problems that are relevant for your research/application, • network with colleague researchers and set up long-lasting scientific collaborations and friendships.

Dates of the workshop: 29 May - 23 June 2017 (4 weeks)

Format: • 29 May - 9 June 2017: lectures and hands-on exercises on (frequency domain) system identification tools • NEW: 12 June - 23 June 2017: collaboration on an individual project, with ELEC researchers. In the last two weeks of the workshop (12 - 23 June), the participants will have the opportunity to collaborate closely on individual projects with ELEC researchers. The content of these projects is to be proposed by the prospective participants, in the line of their research interests, and such that the use of ‘System Identification’ tools has potential benefits.

More info about the content of the courses and on the individual project can be found on the webpage.

Time table: • registration opens: December 2016 • deadline registration: February 15, 2017 • notification of acceptance: March 10, 2017 • workshop: May 29 - June 23, 2017

Registration: will open very soon on the following page
