Message of the Coordinator

I'd like to congratulate the ULičge team for the very nice program they put together for the Study Day at Chateau de Colonster last month. The choice of speakers was great : everyone of them managed to present the main ideas of their research in a very didactical and convincing manner.

I also want to draw again your attention to the possibility to make a short study visit to our overseas partners in Stanford and Princeton. If you are interested in such a visit, you should contact a promotor of the corresponding Belgian DYSCO partners : KULeuven for Stanford and ULičge for Princeton.

Study Days, Workshops and Summer Schools

Third Workshop on Tensor Decompositions and Applications (TDA 2016) : January 18-22, 2016 - Leuven, Belgium

Higher-order tensor methods are intensively studied in many disciplines nowadays. The developments gradually allow us to move from classical vector and matrix based methods in applied mathematics and mathematical engineering to methods that involve tensors of arbitrary order. This step from linear transformations, quadratic and bilinear forms to polynomials and multilinear forms is relevant for the most diverse applications. Furthermore, tensor methods have firm roots in multilinear algebra, algebraic geometry, numerical mathematics and optimization.

This workshop will bring together researchers investigating tensor decompositions and their applications. It will feature a series of invited talks by leading experts and contributed presentations on specific problems. TDA 2016 is held in cooperation with the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and has been endorsed by the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS). Part of the workshop is supported by the ERC Advanced Grant BioTensors.

Tensor Decompositions and Blind Signal Separation : January 15-16, 2016 - Leuven, Belgium

This course is intended to be a short introduction to tensor decompositions and their applications. The course will consist of 4 lectures (of 2 hours each, lecturer: Lieven De Lathauwer) and 4 exercise sessions (also of 2 hours each).

The course will be followed by the Workshop on Tensor Decompositions and Applications (TDA 2016).

Ivan Markovsky appointed Associate editor of the SIAM Journal of Matrix Analysis and Applications

Prof. dr. Ivan Markovsky is appointed associate editor of the SIAM Journal of Matrix Analysis and Applications. The SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications publishes research articles in matrix analysis and its applications, and papers of interest to the numerical linear algebra community. Its aim is to partner applied mathematics with computational science, which is essential to solving many real-world problems. The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) is an international community of over 13,000 members and exists to ensure the strongest possible interactions between mathematics and other scientific and technological communities.

DISC Best Junior Presentation Award 2015 granted to H. Maes, PhD student

IR-ELEC doctoral student Hannes Maes has won the Dutch Institute of Systems and Control (DISC) Best Junior Presentation Award 2015. Hannes was awarded this prize for his presentation titled "Separation of breathing signals from respiratory response using regularization". He delivered this presentation on the 25th of March, at the 34th Benelux Meeting on Systems and Control, which took place in Lommel, Belgium.
