Message of the Coordinator

I'd like to draw your attention to the following upcoming DYSCO events : the next DYSCO study day will be organized by the ULiège team and will take place on Monday May 18, 2015 at the Château de Colonster, Liège. And in June there is our next graduate course entitled Matrix-Free Methods for Smooth Optimization, which will be given at UCL by Dominique Orban (Ecole Polytechnique, Montréal). I encourage you to attend these events.

I also wish to congratulate Vincent Blondel, Rodolphe Sepulchre and Stephen Boyd for their election as SIAM fellows.
Their election reflects the high quality standards of our DYSCO research network !

Awards

Three of the academic members of DYSCO were elected this year as Fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), as announced here.

These were :

Vincent D. Blondel (Université catholique de Louvain)
For contributions to analysis and algorithms for graphs and networks and computational complexity analysis of control problems.

Stephen P. Boyd (Stanford University)
For fundamental contributions to the development, teaching, and practice of optimization in engineering.

and

Rodolphe Sepulchre (Université de Liège and University of Cambridge)
For contributions to nonlinear control theory and nonlinear optimization.

Stanford Study Visits

As you know, the research group of Stephen Boyd at Stanford University is partner in our IAP network.
A budget of 50 000 EUR is available for activities with this partner, e.g., study visits of Belgian researchers at Stanford and study visits of Stanford researchers in Belgium, workshops, etc.

It took a long time before all the administration was arranged, but now we should not hesitate to use the available budget.

Since KU Leuven is managing this budget, here is how to proceed:

  • Proposals for workshops, study visits etc. should be sent to Dirk Roose (dirk.roose@cs.kuleuven.be).
  • A proposal should contain:
    • person(s) involved
    • activity
    • period
    • short motivation
    • requested budget
  • Each proposal will be sent to all promoters for approval / rejection / modification.
  • If approved, the financial aspects (e.g., reimbursements of costs) will be handled by Margot Peeters (margot.peeters@cs.kuleuven.be)
