Course title : Inverse problems and environment : some new tools for atmospheric studies

Dates : March 10-12, 2014

Place: University of Namur

More info: http://www.graduatecollegescience.be/detail.php?lang=en&id=evt_668

Local organizers: Joseph Winkin and Timoteo Carletti
Scientific coordinator: Emmanuel Witrant
Keynote speakers: Anne De Wit, Sander Houweling, Maarten Krol, Franck Pattyn, Annick Sartenaer, Stefan Vandewalle, Emmanuel Witrant.

Global warming is now unequivocal, as mentioned in the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (November 2013). This climate change can be monitored and analyzed, for example, by understanding the warming of the atmosphere and the recent evolution of greenhouse gas. The complexity of the dynamics and the sparsity of the measurements (e.g. direct measurements of the atmosphere or trace gas measurements in ice cores) necessitate advanced methods to reconstruct the past events. The aim of this school is to introduce recent modeling and inverse techniques for solving such key environmental problems with high societal impact. It will emphasize the need for an interdisciplinary approach involving environmental science, optimization, numerical analysis and signal processing. The classes are intended for a broad audience with basic mathematical background (e.g. calculus and differential equations).

33rd Benelux Meeting on Systems and Control : Announcement

The Organizing Committee has the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the 33rd Benelux Meeting on Systems and Control to be held in Centerparcs Heijderbos, Heijen, The Netherlands, on March 25 – 27, 2014.

The aim of this meeting is to promote research activities and cooperation between researchers in Systems and Control. It is the thirty-third in a series of annual conferences that are held alternately in Belgium and The Netherlands. The meeting takes place under the auspices of the Dutch Institute of Systems and Control (DISC) and the Belgian Federation of Automatic Control (BIRA-IBRA), and is sponsored by the “Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek” (NWO).

Invited Speakers

The Scientific Program includes two interesting plenary speakers, namely:

  • Professor Lorenzo Marconi, University of Bologna, Italy (Title: Robust Output Regulation for Continuous-Time and Hybrid Systems).
  • Professor Jacquelien Scherpen, University of Groningen, The Netherlands (title to be announced).

In addition, there will be a Minicourse by Professor Christos Cassandras, Boston University, Boston, USA (title to be announced).

Call for papers

Contributions are now being invited. Each submission consists of a one page abstract of the contribution and must be headed with the title, the names and affiliations of the authors, and the complete mailing address (including electronic mail address) of the corresponding author. We use web based on-line electronic submissions of contributed abstracts. The electronic submission procedure consists of filling out the electronic Submission Form. For each contributed abstract this form must be completed and submitted electronically. Only electronic submissions are accepted.

Details for the preparation of the abstracts can be found in the Authors' Kit. We strongly suggest following the instructions on that page. We emphasize that for all contributed abstracts, the Submission Form must be filled out to make your submission formal. The deadline for receipt of contributed abstracts is January 20, 2014.

Proposals for Special Sessions consisting of four or five lectures centered around a specific topic are also solicited. Special Session Proposals should be send by email to benelux2014@tue.nl. After approval of the invited session proposal, each individual abstract in a Special Session proposal must be submitted via completion of the Submission Form.

Decisions on the conference program will be made by the Organizing Committee. Authors will be notified about the acceptance of their abstract by February 1st, 2014. Final versions of the abstracts, if necessary, are due February 15th, 2014. Abstracts will be included in a “Book of Abstracts” which will be distributed at the conference and will also be available on the web.

Advance Program

The advance program of the Benelux Meeting will not be mailed. It will be made available electronically on the conference website around March 1, 2014.

Best Junior Presentation Award

Continuing a tradition that started in 1996, the Benelux meeting will again include a competition for the Best Junior Presentation Award. Details will be provided on the conference website.
