Message of the Coordinator

It is a pleasure for to me to have a lot of good news to mention to you with the start of the Summer break !

As you probably have heard already, phase VII of the IAP budget has been approved for a new five year period starting in March 2012. This means we can apply for another five year grant and that we have strong hopes to be able to guarantee continued support for our numerous PhD students and postdocs. Notice that the two months gap still has to be addressed but, here also, a possible smooth transition is being negotiated. The first call for proposals is expected this weekend, and we will meet next week to discuss our proposal with the strategic team and the promotors. I would like to take the opportunity to thank all who have helped to make this possible via petitions or other forms of lobbying; special thanks are due for the BELSPO team, but also to Michel Gevers who managed to rally the industrial world behind this cause.

The other good news are the recognition of the scientific contributions of two of our members : Rik Pintelon (VUB) received the 2012 IEEE Joseph Keithly award in instrumentation and measurement, and Bart Vandereycken (KUL/CW) was awarded the Alston Householder Prize for his PhD thesis research. You will find more information on these awards in the newsletter. Congratulations to both of them for a well deserved recognition.

Awards

VUB-ELEC

Rik Pintelon received the 2012 IEEE Joseph F. Keithly award in Instrumentation and Measurement. This award was established in 2001 and replaced the IEEE Morris E. Leeds Award. The recipient selection is administered by the Technical Field Awards Council of the IEEE Awards Board. it is presented to an individual or a team for outstanding contributions in electrical measurements during the last three years. The award consists of a bronze medal, a certificate and a cash honorarium. The nomination of Rik Pintelon was "For the development of innovative system identification methods for measurement applications."

KUL 2

Bart Vandereycken has received the prestigious Alston S. Householder Award. This award, given every three years, recognizes the outstanding contributions of Alston S. Householder, 1904-1993, to numerical analysis and linear algebra. Eligible for the 2011 award were all PhDs earned between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2010. Bart received the award during the 18th Householder Symposium, which took place in Tahoe City, California, June 12-17, 2011 for his thesis on "Riemannian and multilevel optimization for rank-constrained matrix problems". This thesis was obtained at the K.U.Leuven on December 23rd, 2010 under the direction of Stefan Vandewalle. He is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Seminar for Applied Mathematics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich.
