Message of the Coordinator

Dear all,

Today, Monday April 4th, BELSPO organizes a conference at the Palais des Beaux-Arts - Paleis der Schone Kunsten around the evaluation of the IAP-VI programme. The press was invited to this conference and particular attention will be given to the future of the IAP programme. You can see the BELSPO report of this evaluation in the "Reports"? section of our DYSCO website. Let me also mention that Michel Gevers was asked to present there the impact it had on our own network. We can only hope that this event will have a positive effect on our politicians and that they will secure the budget to maintain this fine programme.

I am also pleased to let you know that the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) has nominated DYSCO as the new National Member Organization for Belgium, which recognizes its leading role in Belgium in the area of systems and control.

On Thursday May 12th, the ULg team organizes our next study day in Colonster, Liège. More information to come soon. Please mark that day in your agenda now : I hope to see many of you there !

Finally, I wish to congratulate Johan Schoukens for the Doctor Honoris Causa degree he will receive on May 28th from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

Paul Van Dooren
DYSCO coordinator

The Cor Baayen Award is awarded each year to a promising young researcher in computer science and applied mathematics. The award was created in 1995 to honour the first ERCIM President.
The award consists of a cheque for 5000 Euro together with an award certificate. The selected fellow will be invited to the ERCIM meetings in autumn. A short article on the winner, together with the list of all candidates nominated, will be published in ERCIM News.

Eligibility
Nominees must have carried out their work in one of the 'ERCIM countries': Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom Nominees must have been awarded their PhD (or equivalent) after 30 April 2008. A person can only be nominated once for the Cor Baayen Award.

Submitting a nomination
Nominations should be made by a staff member of the university or research institute where the nominee is undertaking research. Self nominations are not accepted.
To submit a nomination fill out the Cor Baayen Award Nomination Form and provide a URL to the candidate's PhD thesis as well as the candidate's best papers (max. 5).
Nominations must be submitted online - the nomination form is available here. Alternatively contact the ERCIM Executive Committee member (the national contact point) for the country in which the nominee is undertaking research (see http://www.ercim.eu/about/execom)

Selection

Nominees will be informed if they have been selected as one of the two candidates from their country.
The selection of the Cor Baayen award winner is the responsibility of the ERCIM Executive Committee, who will consult expert opinion in reaching their decision.

Further Information can be obtained from your national contact or from the Cor Baayen Award coordinator László Monostori, SZTAKI (laszlo.monostori@ercim.eu).

Introduction to System Identification
12 Apr 2011, 9:00 AM EDT, 2:00 PM EDT

In this webinar, you will learn about system identification from a world-renowned subject expert, Professor Lennart Ljung. Professor Ljung will explain the basic concepts of system identification and show you how to get started with System Identification Toolbox. You will learn:

  • Basic concepts behind identification of models using measured data
  • How to easily estimate transfer functions, state-space models, and other dynamic models using a GUI
  • How to compare and contrast models, validate their quality, and make the estimation results robust to disturbances
  • How to use the estimated models for analysis and control design

A live Q&A session with Professor Ljung will follow the presentation and demos.

You can enroll to secure a spot online via Register for this webinar.
