Message of the Coordinator

With my appointment just starting, it is my pleasure to write my first message as a coordinator of DYSCO.

The heritage I am receiving from my predecessor is invaluable, namely, a well functioning network which was molded over the years to become a model for national research networks in the IAP system. And Michel Gevers was clearly the main orchestrator behind this: systems and control theory in Belgium owes a lot to him. Rather than expanding on his role here, I urge you to attend the IAP day of October 28, where his contributions to the Systems and Control community in Belgium will be highlighted (yes, I know, meanwhile I am also inviting you to stay for an extra day honoring my 60th birthday, but that is mainly because I am getting older ...).

I also want to congratulate Jan Willems for the honorary doctorate he will receive from the University of Liege. This event will take place on October 16, but on October 15, Jan will present a special lecture on “Open Dynamical Systems”, which is just one of his many fundamental contributions to the area of Systems and Control.

Finally, let me draw your attention to the announcements of the Graduate School Programme of this academic year and of the Benelux Meeting on Systems and Control 2011. Please circulate that information within your research group.

I hope to see many of you at these different events.

Paul Van Dooren
Freshly appointed coordinator of DYSCO
