Message of the Coordinator

In the middle of this splendid heatwave, I could just say "Have a great vacation, and see you back in September". But some people might think that with old age arriving rapidly, I tend to be lazy.

So let me just add two pieces of information and a great announcement. The first one is that the evaluation of our network by a panel of international experts will take place on Monday 11 October. Unlike previous evaluations, there will be no on-site visit. The coordinators of the different networks are invited to present their activities to a panel of experts who will serve for all networks in the exact sciences. They will have received a number of written evaluations from experts in our field. Paul Van Dooren, who will take over as coordinator of DYSCO on 1 October, will join me at this interview, together possibly with one or two other members of our team of promotors. Details will follow.

The other piece of information is that, under the leadership of Vincent Blondel, a small group has been set up that has started to brain-storm about the future of DYSCO under the next phase of the IAP programme. The news is that this work has started with enthusiasm, and that the group will meet again in August and after the October evaluation. I am of course delighted with this course of events.

And now for the great announcement. It is a great pleasure to announce that Bart De Moor (from the KUL1 team) will be awarded the prestigious FWO Excellence Prize, also called the De Leeuw-Damry-Bourlart Prize in the Applied Sciences. This is a prize awarded every five years by the FWO. The award ceremony will take place on 23 November. This is a tribute to the vast scientific contributions of Bart on a very wide range of topics. Congratulations, Bart.

And now I can reasonably conclude this Newsletter by wishing you all a very pleasant Summer.

Michel Gevers
Coordinator of DYSCO

Study Days, Workshops and Summer Schools

Abstract:
Dynamical systems composed of a large number of relatively simple interacting systems are attracting a large attention in the scientific community because they can model many complex infrastructures and service systems. Examples coming from the technological fields include transportation networks, power grids, water distribution networks, communication networks, while additional relevant examples can be found in other areas, e.g., the global financial network, genetic expression networks, ecological networks, social networks and so on. The traditional tools of dynamical systems theory are not suitable to domain the problems arising in this context, since this kind of systems may exhibit new behavior and so they pose new questions to the control community. One of these consists in understanding how the laws describing the local interactions and the network structure influence the emerging behaviour of the global system.
In recent years many there have been important advances in different areas, namely in statistical physics, in biology, in economics and in engineering. In this school some of these advances will be proposed with more specific attention to contributions in the field of control of this class of systems.
The lecturers at the summer school will be:
Pr. Sandro Zampieri, University of Padova, Italy
