Introduction to data protection principles

19 November 2007 (09:15 - 12:30), UCL, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium.

Speaker

Jean HERVEG, member of the CRID (Research Center for Computer and Law) and "Maître de Conférences" at the Law School of the Namur University, Belgium.

Abstract

The Training Day on Data Protection aims at providing the audience with an introduction to the basic notions and mechanisms of data protection rules. It is indeed essential that engineers and researchers involved in developing new Information Society Systems or Applications be aware of these rules, since these rules are more than likely susceptible to deeply influence the conception and the implementation of these Information Society Technologies. There is for example no need to invest money and time in a new application which will be declared unlawful due to the lack of compliance with existing regulatory requirements.

In this tutorial, the notions and mechanisms on data protection rules will be introduced by means of examples rather than by a theoretical approach.
